Logan Paul Isn’t the Problem

Logan Paul, long gone from YouTube, made his triumphant return this week by pulling a fish out of water and performing CPR on it and shooting a dead rat with a TASER. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the genius is back.

After his most recent shit storm, YouTube has now officially pulled all advertising from Paul’s channel. Here’s the official statement.

After careful consideration, we have decided to temporarily suspend ads on Logan Paul’s YouTube channels. This is not a decision we made lightly, however, we believe he has exhibited a pattern of behavior in his videos that makes his channel not only unsuitable for advertisers, but also potentially damaging to the broader creator community.

But…but how is this any different than what he was doing before the whole suicide forrest controversy? Huh, YouTube? This is exactly the kind of stupid, ridiculous, braincell killing content he was producing before he made fun of a dead guy. So why is it such a big deal now?

Logan Paul isn’t the problem. YouTube is the problem.

They created this monster. They put him front and center in their ‘2018 Wrap Up’ video. They allowed him to flourish and make millions of dollars just because he could create content people wanted to watch. And really, that’s why he’s famous. I know a lot of people don’t understand this, or maybe they don’t want to understand this because they’ve let their kids watch this trash for years (my aunt is one of those people), but this is the kind of shit he’s been doing since the very beginning. This isn’t new. Him shooting a mouse with a TASER is actually pretty tame for a Logan Paul video. You helped create this monster. You have no one to be mad at but yourself.

But you know what? There are plenty of other channels out there that create content people want to watch that don’t get the time of day from YouTube anymore. Like WheezyWaiter. Wheezy’s been using YouTube since the late ’00s and has produced more videos than you’d know what to do with. He’s become a sensation among small vlog communities and works with PBS on many different educational miniseries. He’s also mastered cloning technology. Where are Logan Paul’s clones at? Hm?

In the most recent YouTube ad-pocalypse, he totally got screwed and lost a lot of revenue off his videos. A lot of other YouTubers I follow lost money, and some even went mildly insane. But it wasn’t their fault. They got caught in the crossfire after ‘creators’ like Logan Paul pushed their ‘pull’ with YouTube too far.

So now the platform is having to overcorrect, and people like Wheezy are taking the blunt of the punishment. No one is safe, not even their golden child. Maybe YouTube could quit playing favorites and start treating artists, the people who made the platform what it is in the first place, like the real heroes instead of playing favorites.

Logan Paul will continue to make ass loads of money; there’s no doubt about that. What there are doubts about are whether or not it will be with ad revenue, with tour money, with merchandise money, or hell, if he’ll get a show on some other streaming service. He’s a cash cow. He brings in bills. That’s why YouTube loved him. But they allowed his nonsense to go on too far.

There are plenty of others just like Logan Paul who make stupid, ridiculous, mindless videos just to turn a profit. There are also people who basically make child pornography and put it up on YouTube to make millions. Something’s going to give, one of these days. Until then, try supporting artists who make quality videos instead of people who make jokes about someone who just committed suicide. That’s a message for you and for YouTube.
